Sometime two weeks ago, in jolly OLD ENGLAND.
--
HOW MANY MORE DAYS? It was beginning to feel never-ending, it was just so unbearable! She was complaining, but at least she had something to look forward too. Some motivation to get her through these last days. It was a mixture of motivation and a distraction because she still had a job to do, she was still on the clock but all she could do was scroll through her phone looking through emails, researching names of superstars that had already signed weeks prior. It seemed as if nothing around her mattered. Things were just happening all around her, but she was off in her own world ONLY to be brought back with the slamming of papers. Sage leaned on the counter as customers were probably wondering where the service is, and she looked through the first week of things. She was mad she couldn't made it for the grand opening, but the whole process was a tad more difficult for her being that she was so far away.
"SAGE! DAMMIT, get it together. Let's please have things end on a good note." Her manager, Rory, hissed in her direction as she lowered her glasses. She was the most miserable wrench, but you couldn't really blame her. She was thirty-five working the same job she got back when she was supposedly working and taking a year off to save up for a school. Which of course never happened. Like most people Sage knew; Rory had no drive, hence why she was so miserable.
"Table four has been seated for about I don't know... ten minutes. Get on it."
"Sorry, sorry..." She replied, hurrying off but still feeling her gaze practically BURNING through her head as she walked over to the table as she plastered on her best smile, "Welcome to Jukebox Burger , my name is Sage and I'll be your waiter for this evening. Can I get you guys some drinks to start off with?" To which they nodded and proceeded to talk as she scribbled down on her tiny notebook. "Alright, I'll get started on those drinks now. If you have any questions, let me know!"
They better not have any questions, she thought to herself smiling as she walked off. While her words said one thing, her eyes were secretly pleading with them to eat a damn burger like everybody else and just leave, but not without a generous tip. It what made this job sort of worth it, without it there was no way she would have willingly chosen this. She had just about had it living this lifestyle, feeling like a robot. She would wake up early every morning and open at this place and then if she was lucky enough, every couple weeks wrestle a few matches at the a small run company. It held matches at a local high school just thirty minutes out of the city, so she would bus there and all just to perform in front of a crowd of thirty people. All just to walk out with a pat on a shoulder. These events never paid anything, which is why her parents always tried to talk her out of it. They had some sense though because she had been wrestling since graduating and things had not changed much since. While she has been struggling her friends have went off after graduating to travel the world while she was still on this one thing. Damn wrestling. It didn't pay, it actually often took a lot of money out of her pockets. She was just about to unfortunately give up all hopes and maybe take an easier route, before she caught a break. Or rather found a fool silly enough to hire someone like her. A fool she was extremely grateful for.
Sage walked over and got the couple their drinks before going to another table that was ready to order. Once it was all done, she walked over to the counter window that separated the kitchen staff from the rest of the restaurant. With good reason because if they saw what that place looked like back there there probably wouldn't be anyone putting in any orders. But she couldn't judge, well.. she really couldn't afford too. Not yet. Maybe when she made it big or something she would come back to buy the place and actually make it into something.... nice. Make it into something that.... followed all the proper health codes? Something like that.
"Table six will be having two burger and chips, easy on the ketchup this time Freddy. I think most customers like the burger to be the main dish and not the condiments. Just a thought, take it or leave it!"
The lovable pink haired, Sage, spoke through the window separating the kitchen from the rest of the restaurant. She blew him a kiss, scratching on her note pad. Sure she was being a little sassy, but having been a server for five years at this diner at the edge of the city she had heard her fair share of complaints from customers. She relayed them to the kitchen and to management, but it always fell on deaf ears. No one wanted to admit that they needed to fix a few things about themselves or what they were doing. So instead of growing as an individual stayed stuck in the same place. Sage didn't want to be stuck. She always had dreaming of making it big. While it was nice wrestling in London, it seemed to make it big you had to spread your wings. Make a name for yourself elsewhere.
"Fuck off..."
She could hear him mutter as he turned to the grill to start the order. She didn't bother answering because surprisingly and for the first time she did not want any trouble. It was taking everything out of her to not roll her eyes and smack him on the side of his head. Sage just had to keep reminding herself that would be out of this place soon. After all, this would be her last shift before she took the big leap. No more searching far and wide for opportunities. She had signed with a new and upcoming company over the pond, Iconic Pro Wrestling. This was her first time being so far from home, but she was grateful to be able to concentrate a bit more on a craft. Sage walked over to meet one of the other servers, giving them the scoop on the tables she would be handing over before FINALLY taking off her "JukeBox" apron for the last time. It felt amazing. She let out a breath before exiting the diner and heading over to get her stuff. For the last five months, she had been saving up by living on a friends couch to make this whole dream possible. She just hoped, after all the work she put in, it was all worth it in the end.
It was costing her selling everything she owned to go to a country that her family visited once back sometime in the 90s, that she vaguely remembered but was sort of reminded by the pictures they had all around their house. Sage wasn't sure if she was going to like it, but she was damn sure she was going to make sure they liked her. Because if she was literally risking everything, she was going to make it worth her while. She wasn't going to go and be silent. It would start off kind as she got a feel for things, until trouble brewed as it always did when she was around. It was one of those uncontrollable talents of hers. But all in all even if they didn't like her, or if they grew to love her... It didn't really matter. As long as people were talking. As long as she was building that platform for herself. It was a shame that it would have to be at the cost of many individuals that she respected. There was so many people that inspired her to sign and to get working at her craft. WHICH WAS AMAZING, a dream come true. But now she was supposed to go over there, she was EXPECTED to go over there and prove her worth to which they would probably think very little. And with all due respect, she could understand. The sight of her was a little underwhelming, maybe some would even say a little odd-looking? She didn't exactly fit the "type" or the "mold", but that was exactly what would help her succeed.
"WHERE YOU GOING? Your shift only ends in three hours!"
She could hear Rory fuming as she continued to walk off as if she didn't hear her. She continued to scream, so Sage felt like maybe what she had done was a tad uncalled for. A tad unfair to the others so she did what she could AT LEAST did out of the kindness of her heart of course, so she turned away and AT LEAST gave her a final wave with a cheeky air kiss as she ran off eagerly to start her new adventure.
