The Death of a Brother
21 August 2018
There I was laying on the sofa in my new apartment, I was half a sleep and half awake. It was the first time I was able to relax after spending the last few years in the Asia bouncing around in and out of different promotions wrestling. When out of nowhere my cell phone started ringing.
I stumbled as I sat up reaching into my pocket. “Hello…” There was no answer. “Anyone there?” I asked as I was getting a little annoyed. “Either you answer me or I am hanging up. Nevermind, I’m just gonna hang up now!” I said
“No… wait” a familiar voice replied.
“Kayleigh?” surprised I said as I had cut all of them out of my life just before I left for Japan.
“yes it’s me…” she pauses for a few seconds. “I wasn’t sure if you was going by Jackson or Alexander!” she said.
“Kayleigh, it doesn’t matter really I know it will take time, but that’s not why you called me what do you need?” I asked as I was thinking that the family must have heard that I returned to the states and they was reaching out to me.
As I was waiting for her to reply all I could hear was her crying and all of the sudden the line goes dead. “Fucking AT&T!” I yelled as I threw the phone up against the wall.
I didn’t know what was going on or why she called me. I couldn’t think straight I was worried it was something to do with our Amber my step mother as her health wasn’t the best. I couldn’t say for sure. I decided to see about using my neighbor’s phone. Just as I was about to go out the door my phone ringed again I ran over to where it was at and answered It.
“Kayleigh?” I quickly said.
“No Alex, it’s Drew” He said with a sorrow tone of voice.
Drew was one to not show emotion or allow people to see him hurting, however just from the tone of his voice I knew something was up.
“What is it Drew? Is it mom? I anxiously asked.
“It’s not mom Alex…” he let out a sigh, I could hear him inhale on the line. “It is Sean, the doctors don’t think he will make it past the weekend. You need to come home.” he pleaded.
At first I was silent I couldn’t believe what he said so with my voice all choked up I uttered “You’re lying!” the tears rolled down my face like the water at Niagara Falls. I knew he wasn’t lying, but to me Sean was invincible.
“Alex, you know me I have always been honest with you” Drew stated.
I pulled myself together and then before replying. “I know Drew, I will be on my way, tell Sean to hold on for me.” I never thought that I would be saying those words. I ended the call and grabbed by bag that I haven’t unpacked and headed out the door.
After wasting an hour I finally got a flight down there with an hour layover in Atlanta. Finally I was able to get on the flight to Biloxi. It was unbearable thinking that I might not make it in time. What was a 55 minute flight seemed like 4 hours. I didn’t know what I was going to do I know that it would could be hard getting a rental last minute. However I didn’t care I would take a taxi or uber it didn’t matter.
The plane touched down in Biloxi. I made my way through that small airport and grabbed my bag from baggage claim. I started to head toward the car rental center when I heard my name being yelled out.
“Alex, turn around.” the voice yelled!
I turned around and there was Drew standing along with his girlfriend Emily. I walked over toward the both of them and they embraced me with a hug.
“You are not getting a rental, Kandra had me bring the charger here for you.” Drew said as he tossed me the keys.
“Thanks Drew, I will talk with you after I get to the hospital so forgive me for being rude.” I uttered as I headed toward the doors and out to the car as the scene fades away.
About an hour or so later I arrive at the hospital in Mobile as I walk through the doors I run into Amber my step mother who was sitting on a bench crying. My heart sunk thinking I was too late.
I made my way over to her. “Mom…” I said with a look of disbelief.
She looks up at me and wrapped her arms around me. “He’s... He’s holding on to see you my baby boy!” she cried as she grabbed my arm and lead me to his room.
I stood at the door to his room looking in I could see Kayleigh holding his hand and talking to him she looks up and notices me staring at her and the man lying in the bed. She kisses him on the forehead as she stands up and walks over to Me.
“Can we talk in privet?” She asks.
“Yes!” I replied.
We moved to a secluded area. She hugged me and didn’t want to let go. I have always been close to her and Sean. I am even the godfather of their now grown and married girl Lily Mason-James.
“Thank you for coming Jacks..err Alexander!” She pauses for a few seconds. “We don’t have much time so please allow me to tell you everything that you need to know and then I will give you some time with him.” She begged.
I nodded my head allowing her to know that I understand.
“Thank you, Sean has a notebook full of letters to you which you will need to read he said. I think it is best that you understand what you will see when you go in there. He isn’t the Sean you remember. He looks like he has aged 20 or 30 years. It was about two years ago just after you left for Asia we found out he had colon cancer. Sean demanded that we keep it a secret he didn’t want anyone to feel obligated to be here for us. I think he was mainly thinking of you because despite what happened he knew you would feel obligated to be there for us. I have to agree with him on that because that is just who you are. Right now he is hooked up to a machine for breathing and he made me promise him long ago that I will have them pull the plug when the time is right. However I want you to know that the machine is not keeping him alive. You are what is keeping him alive, you two might not be blood related but you and Dylan was his brothers and when Dylan died much like you a piece of him died. So promise me you will be strong!” She said.
I was at a loss for words didn’t know what to say so I did what felt natural and wrapped my arms around her. “I love you sis!” I whispered in her ears.
Once we released she took me into Sean’s room where Amber was sitting there talking to him.
“Amber, I promised Alexander I would let him have some alone time with Sean so if you don’t mind would you come with me and get a coffee?” Kayleigh said.
Amber nodded and the two left the room. I stood at the end of Sean’s bed looking at him in disbelief to see a man that took me in with no questions. Someone I could bounce my ideas with and be there for me no matter what lying motionless in the bed brought tears to my eyes. I slowly made my way to the chair and sat there.
“Sean, I don’t know if you can hear me, but it’s me Alex or Jackson which ever you prefer. I don’t really know what to say. I will make the same promise I we made to Dylan a few years ago I will watch out and help Kayleigh and Lily.” I paused for a moment and wiped the tears from my eyes. “Promise me you will tell Dylan I said hi. Can you hear me?” I said as I grabbed his hand.
Then in a brief moment Sean opened his eyes and looked at me and in a weekend voice he spoke. “I love you bud.” he then cracked a smile.
The moment of happiness I felt from seeing that soon turned to horror his heart machine started beeping and he flat lined nurses and doctors came rushing in along with my stepfather they pulled me from the room.
45 minutes has passed and I sat alone in a corner while the rest of the family surrounded Kayleigh and Lily the doctor came out of Sean’s room and walked over to Kayleigh and said something to her. It didn’t take me long to figure out what he said I could see it in her reaction that Sean has passed. For the first time in my life I felt all alone and pure heartbroken.
